On the evening of July 6th, 2020, the opening ceremony of the 5th Zhi-Hong International Summer School of Advanced Materials (Zhi-Hong ISS) hosted by the School of Material Science and Engineering (SMSE), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was held online. The theme of Zhi-Hong ISS this time is Advanced Functional Materials. Associate Professor Ping Li (Deputy Director of International Affairs Division of SJTU), Associate Professor Ke Chen (Deputy Director of International Affairs Division of SJTU), Professor Tao Deng (Vice Dean of SJTU-SMSE), Professor Hong Wang (Teacher Representative of Zhi-Hong ISS) and other teachers from Zhi-Hong ISS work group attended the Opening Ceremony. Fifty students of 25 institutes from 7 different countries, including Russia, Brazil, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Egypt, India and China, met together on the Internet. The Opening Ceremony was hosted by Associate Professor Tao Hang, the Assistant Dean of the SMSE.
Deputy Director Ping Li first presented a warm welcome to all the students of the summer school. Due to the influence of COVID-19, an innovative online form of education was taken by Zhi-Hong ISS this year. Students with different cultural backgrounds could not only learn about the academic frontiers in the field of functional materials, but also communicate and cooperate with each other via the Internet. She wished the success of the summer school, believing it would leave a unique and memorable experience for all participants.
Vice Dean Tao Deng was proud of the fact that the summer school can be held as scheduled, despite all the difficulties this year, and deeply appreciated the support from the summer school’s work groups and participants. He hoped that all the students could study hard and acquire knowledge about academic frontiers, encouraged them to improve the understanding of different countries and cultures, and wished them great joy in this unique online summer school.
As the Teacher Representative of the summer school, Professor Hong Wang mentioned that it is the fourth time for him to be a lecturer of Zhi-Hong ISS, and also the first time to deliver his lecture to students from all over the world through the Internet. He looked forward to the online summer school this year, hoping it provides academic enlightenment and professional elevation for the participants.
Stephan Kulikov, a Master student of SMSE, delivered a speech as the Student Representative of the summer school. Combining his own experience, he vividly introduced the campus and extracurricular activities in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, as well as the landscape, food and culture of Shanghai. He also introduced useful social software in China to facilitate summer school participants’ communication.
After the speech, all students and teachers of the summer school took an online group photo to preserve the precious memory.
