A molecular scientist and chemist from The University of Western Australia who is working to discover new ways to convert heat into energy has been awarded the 2020 HG Smith Memorial Award.
Award recipient Professor Paul Low, from UWA’s School of Molecular Sciences said his research focused on electron transfer chemistry, which is how charges move through molecules.
“Advancing research in electron transfer chemistry has many applications, including allowing us to harvest waste heat generated by electronic devices and convert it back to electric charge, making the devices more energy efficient,”

The national award, presented by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, recognises significant contribution to a branch of chemical science.
“I feel incredibly humbled to receive the HG Smith Memorial Award,” Professor Low said. “It’s a great recognition of more than a decade’s worth of research and reflects the efforts of the team at the School of Molecular Sciences.”
