Eight University of Wollongong (UOW) researchers have been recognised in the 2021 Clarivate Highly Cited researchers list, announced on Tuesday 16 November 2021.
The list identifies the elite group of people who have made significant contributions to global research.
Distinguished Professor Shi Xue Dou appeared on the list twice, in the fields of Cheimstry and Materials Science.
Also on the list were Distinguished Professor Zaiping Guo (Cross-Field), Professor Shujun Zhang (Cross-Field), Professor Jung Ho Kim (Cross-Field), Professor Jun Chen (Cross-Field), Distinguished Professor Yoshio Bando (Materials Science), Distinguished Professor Hua Kun Liu (Materials Science), and Senior Professor Anthony Okely (Social Sciences).
Six of the UOW researchers, Professor Dou, Professor Guo, Professor Bando, Professor Kim, Professor Zhang, and Professor Liu were from the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) within UOW’s Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM).
Professor Jun Chen was from the Intelligent Polymer Research Institute (IPRI), another research centre within AIIM.
AIIM is a purpose-built facility at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus to help transform multi-functional materials research into commercial reality. Researchers at AIIM are at the cutting edge of developing and applying new and innovative materials.
The multi-disciplinary focus of the Institute brings together biologists, clinicians, chemists, physicists engineers and materials scientists.
The other researcher on the list, Professor Okely, from the School of Health and Society, a world-leading expert on physical activity and children and former Director of UOW’s Early Start.
Professor Bando has appeared on the list in each of the past five years, while Professor Dou, Professor Liu and Professor Guo have featured in each of the past four years. It is the third time Professor Chen has made the list, and the second appearance for Professor Okely.
Professor Kim and Professor Zhang appear on the list for the first time in 2021.
UOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Jennifer Martin AC congratulated the researchers for their outstanding work and being recognised among the top highly cited researchers globally.
“UOW community is extremely proud of the achievement of all the researchers named in the Highly Cited Researchers List,” Professor Martin said.
“The outstanding and diversified work being done throughout research institutes at the University is a result of the contributions made by our world-class researchers and their breakthrough research outcomes.”
More than 6,600 researchers, in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences, and cross-field categories were selected based on the number of highly cited papers they produced over an 11-year period from January 2010 to December 2020.
The names on the list are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1 per cent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science™ citation index, and the list identifies the research institutions and countries where they are based.
