University of Hull graduate Matt Johnson has launched a new Hull-based content marketing agency after three years of successful freelancing.
Matt, who graduated in 2018 with a First-Class degree in Marketing, has decided to make the switch from sole-trader to limited company after another year of growth as a freelancer.
Discussing the launch of his marketing agency, Different Resonance, Matt said: “Having grown up in the area, studied at the University, spent my placement year as part of the Hull 2017 team and set up my business here, Hull is very much at the heart of what I do.
“I hope that Different Resonance can go on to help retain talent in the city and help other graduates fulfil their potential.”
Over the past three years, Matt has worked with a whole range of businesses from the legal sector through to arts and culture, implementing what he learnt at the University with his clients on a daily basis.
He also recently delivered a session as part of Humber Business Week breaking down a core marketing principle.
Now based at C4DI, a tech hub based in Hull’s Fruit Market area, Matt said: “As I came to the end of my degree, I was weighing up whether I should go down a more traditional route of employment or take the leap and go it alone as a freelancer.
“It was thanks to the support of Peter Andrews and Paula Gouldthorpe that I got my freelance career off the ground.
“In fact, I’m still in contact with them both to this day.”
While studying at the University of Hull, Matt said he had developed life-skills that had served him well throughout his business career.
One of the standout experiences was the industry placement Matt undertook as part of his degree.
“The placement year is fantastic. It gives you a chance to get out there and put into practice what you’ve been taught on the course.
“I was privileged to spend my year with the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 team, working on the marketing for some of the biggest events this city has ever seen,” Matt said.
In the future, Matt hopes Different Resonance will be able to give a similar experience to students at the University of Hull.
Having already presented to students on a number of occasions, Matt buys into the Hull University Business School’s philosophy of providing a practical, hands-on experience – something which he befitted from during his time at the University.
