The University of Macau (UM) 24 November held the Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2021. During the ceremony, the university presented scholarships and academic prizes to 356 students for their outstanding academic performance.
UM’s Acting Rector Michael Hui congratulated the students and thanked the donors of the scholarships and academic prizes. According to him, UM has been actively participating in the development of the country, the Greater Bay Area, and Macao in recent years. Among other things, the university received approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology to establish the first state key laboratory of internet of things for smart cities in China. The university also built its first industry-academia base in the Greater Bay Area via the Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute, which was followed by the establishment of various research centres. In addition, the university established the Public Administration Training Centre last year, and its Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship has received approval to serve as a national co-working space.
In January 2021, UM received approval from the central government to establish the Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology. With this centre, the university aims to provide precision medicine treatment for cancer patients in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and China, and to facilitate the development of Macao into a world centre of tourism and leisure. According to Hui, UM will continue to take advantage of the ‘One Country, Two System’ policy and position itself as a university of Macao and for Macao, align with national development strategies, and strive to become more international, in order to contribute to the development of Macao and the country.
Feng Yuzhao, recipient of both the Nam Kwong Education Scholarship and the Henry Fok Foundation Scholarship, is a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Health and Sciences. She is also a student in the Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College and has been included on the Rector’s Honour List for the 2020/2021 Academic Year. She is grateful to the university for having a fair scholarship distribution mechanism, which ensures that excellence and hard work are rewarded. Feng says UM provides various resources, facilities, and materials for students to learn knowledge in different fields, and she hopes to use what she has learned at UM to give back to society and her alma mater.
