Clearing hotline operators have been busy fielding calls from a volley of hopeful applicants looking to secure a place at Kingston University following the release of A-level results.
More than 100 operators have been responding to queries and guiding applicants through the Clearing process. The University’s lines opened at 8am on Thursday 18 August, with hundreds of calls taken in the first hour alone.
The Clearing hotline team, which includes current and former students and course admission tutors, has been speaking to A-level students who didn’t quite get the grades they were hoping for or who have changed their minds about their chosen course or place of study.
The operators have also been guiding applicants eager to return to education after a gap year or as a mature student. Prospective students have been making enquiries about a wide variety of programmes on offer at the University, with life sciences and business courses proving popular. While there are still some places available on courses, including environmental science, journalism, engineering, psychology and accounting and finance, they have been filling up fast and applicants are encouraged to call the University’s hotline as soon as they can to have the best chance of securing a spot on a degree programme.
Provost Professor Helen Laville, who has been helping out on the Clearing hotline, has spoken to a range of students, including those excitedly confirming their place at Kingston University, discussing changes they would like to make to their subject choices and others deciding to come to the University through Clearing.
“I’ve spoken to a student who was changing direction from arts to healthcare and wanted to find out about our life sciences programmes. It’s really rewarding to talk to the students, discuss their options and hear their delight when we can make them an offer,” Professor Laville said. “We’ve got a team of academics available to speak to students, which means we can answer their questions about courses and get applicants through the Clearing process quickly.”
As well as helping callers find a suitable degree course, the University’s hotline operators have been dispensing plenty of reassuring advice, answering questions about an array of subject areas and explaining more about university life at Kingston.
Prospective students can also find out more about Kingston University at a virtual Open Day on Saturday 20 August, where they can learn more about courses, meet lecturers and current students and take virtual tours of the campuses and accommodation.
