Deakin University has welcomed Anam Cara House, a state-of-the-art palliative care facility, to the Waurn Ponds campus after it was officially launched on Saturday.
Anam Cara House provides a range of invaluable end-of-life palliative respite choices for people with life-limiting illnesses and the people who care for them.
Care occurs in a home-like environment that provides best practice clinical services plus support from trained palliative care volunteers.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin attended the official opening and said Deakin and Anam Cara House share an essential partnership.
“As a former cancer surgeon, I am intimately aware of how important these facilities are for patients and their families. They help to ensure we can provide the best possible care and support during what is inevitably a very challenging time,” Professor Martin said.
“Deakin is proud to be involved in this partnership and to be able to provide the location on our Waurn Ponds campus. Our partnership is a manifestation of a campus that is open to the community, and that is part of the community.”
Professor Rachel Huxley, Executive Dean of Deakin’s Health Faculty, said Anam Cara House would greatly benefit the Deakin and broader communities.
“We care about having compassionate doctors here at Deakin, and it’s what we’re known for; well-rounded and well-ground students across all of our health disciplines,” Professor Huxley said.
