Callum Allardice has been appointed the inaugural Creative New Zealand / NZSM Jazz Composer-in-Residence by Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
The residency is one of three annual composer residencies, and is the second to be announced for 2022, with Jerome Kavanagh recently having taken up the Composer-in-Residence role.
Callum is a well-known jazz guitarist and composer. Born in Motueka, he is an alumnus of the University, and has previously taught jazz theory at the NZSM, and jazz guitar in the Young Musician’s programme.
Callum says, “I was very excited when I received the news, and after telling my partner, my mind quickly went into planning mode.
“While I’m in residence, I’ll be doing two projects that explore the relationship between composition and improvisation. One is for a 17+ person ensemble, and the other is a quartet. I can’t wait to release an album under my own name, with complete artistic licence.”
NZSM jazz programme director Dr Dave Wilson says, “Callum’s proposal and CV showed he had a proven track record as a nationally recognised composer and jazz artist of outstanding merit. He has numerous published recordings and prestigious performances, and is highly regarded by his peers for his compositional work.
“The panel was particularly struck by the fact that this residency would lead to Callum releasing recordings under his own name for the first time in his career. We felt that enabling this next step for Callum is strongly in line with the goals of the residency, which include stimulating compelling contributions to jazz in New Zealand.”
Professor Sally Jane Norman, director of the NZSM, says, “It’s exciting for us to host our first jazz composer-in-residence, strengthening Te Kōkī’s commitment to all kinds of music. And we’re delighted to launch this new development with a musician and composer of Callum’s calibre.”
Callum will be in residence at the NZSM from 27 June and will receive a stipend as part of his residency.
