The University of Macau (UM) Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education (UM Faculty of Science and Technology) has been included in the first batch of 2021-2025 national science education bases. UM is the first university in Macao to have entered the list.
As an internationalised comprehensive public university in Macao, UM has always been committed to providing quality education services to local students and nurturing outstanding professionals for Macao. The university attaches great importance to science popularisation and has been actively promoting the development of basic education in Macao. The Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education was jointly established in June 2018 by UM and the Science and Technology Development Fund, the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the Chinese Educators Association of Macau, the Macao Catholic Schools Association, the Macao Science Center, and the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau. With UM’s Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion as the core component and using resources provided by UM’s state key laboratories and advanced research platforms, the base offers STEM programmes to support science promotion in Macao and provides continuous training for teachers and students from local secondary schools. The base also advances science promotion in Macao by collaborating with all strata of society. So far, the base has organised summer camps, outreach programmes, the Liaison Professor to High School Project, the International Workshop on Research Innovation and STEM Education for Next Generation, science training workshops for teachers in primary and secondary schools, a technological innovation competition sponsored by the Bank of China, as well as various visits and science popularisation competitions. The activities attracted many participants and have been recognised by the local community.
The inclusion of the Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education in the first batch of 2021-2025 national science education bases by the China Association for Science and Technology is testament to the central government’s recognition of UM’s efforts in science popularisation. The university will further increase and open up quality science and technology resources and will provide more and better public services for the public to advance its goal of popularising science education. The Association for the Promotion of Science and Technology of Macau was commissioned by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology to conduct the application process for this accreditation.
