Can carbon solve the carbon problem?

Professor Ajit Sarmah has written the book on biochar, a form of carbon that at scale could have a major impact in reducing carbon emissions.

Biochar is an ancient technology that could become a major way to address the climate crisis.

Professor Ajit Sarmah’s research has found that by adding biochar to cement mixture can reduce net carbon emissions from concrete by 20 per cent. If concrete was a country, then it would be the third largest carbon emitter in the world after the United States and China.

Professor Sarmah spoke at the inaugural Hīkina kia Tutuki, Rise to the Challenge: Researchers with Global Impact event, hosted by Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.
