The University of Melbourne has offered its first Narrm Scholarships to eligible students who have received their Year 12 results today, alongside its esteemed Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship offered to students who achieved academically outstanding results.
The longstanding Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship offers fee remissions, a guaranteed place in coveted graduate programs including the Doctor of Medicine and Juris Doctor (Law) for students who meet the prerequisite course and entry requirements, a generous annual allowance for the duration of their undergraduate studies, and the offer of a Melbourne Global Scholars Award of up to $2500 to study overseas through an Exchange or Study Abroad program.
The University today also offered its inaugural Narrm Scholarships to Indigenous Australian students and eligible Access Melbourne applicants, following the October 2023 announcement of the Narrm Scholarship Program which offers financial and enrichment support to students who have traditionally faced barriers to tertiary study.
University of Melbourne Provost Professor Nicola Phillips congratulated the scholarship recipients.
“We are excited to welcome these talented young people to join our academic community. These students’ impressive achievements are indicative of their commitment, their hard work, and the support of their families” Professor Phillips said.
The Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship is offered to school-leaver applicants who have satisfied prerequisites (and any extra requirements) and achieved an ATAR or equivalent of 99.9 or above, Bachelor of Music applicants who achieved an ATAR or equivalent of 99.85 or above, and Indigenous students who gained an ATAR of 90.00 or above.
The University has signaled its commitment to change the makeup of its student body by significantly increasing the representation of Indigenous Australian students and other students meeting certain special entry access scheme criteria by 2030.
Narrm Scholars, who come from a variety of backgrounds and locations across Australia, will be welcomed to campus through a pre-Orientation camp as part of their enrichment program offering in early 2024.
Professor Phillips emphasised the transformative impact of both scholarships: “These opportunities are about academic pursuit in one of the world’s great universities, but they are also about allowing students to create and discover a path for themselves that reflects their passions and talents, belonging to a university community that celebrates diverse backgrounds, interests, and perspectives.”
