Professor Geoff McLay is currently acting dean of Te Kauhanganui Tātai Ture―Faculty of Law at Te Herenga Waka.
Geoff has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses at the Faculty of Law since 1995, most recently concentrating in law reform and private law―torts and equities. He has also published a wide range of articles in these areas. In 2006, Geoff was the New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellow.
Geoff has made significant contributions to the Faculty, wider legal profession and nation during his career, serving as a Law Commissioner between 2010 and 2015 and as the chair of the Legislation Design Advisory Committee’s (LDAC) external subcommittee until 2019. He is also the editor of the New Zealand Law Reports. While at the Law Commission, Geoff led projects on Credit Repossession, Trusts, Incorporated Societies, Crown Proceedings, Extradition and Mutual Assistance, and Classified and Security Information. He also led the project to rewrite the LDAC’s Guidelines, which all New Zealand legislation must comply with.
Geoff is well known across the University and never hesitates to share his passionate belief in the rich history and exciting future of Te Kauhanganui Tātai Ture.
Outlining his vision for the future, Geoff says, “The Law Faculty is blessed with wonderful academic and professional staff, supported by an engaged worldwide alumni network. We produce world-leading research that would be the envy of many much larger law schools. My job is to build on that so that a thriving law school can help Te Herenga Waka flourish. I’m particularly excited to work with colleagues at WSGB to take better advantage of our extraordinary Pipitea location.
“There may also be mention of cricket every now and then!”
As Geoff was in the acting dean role, his deanship began on Monday 18 November.
