Edinburgh listed among world’s best for reputation

Edinburgh’s position as a world-leading university has been reaffirmed in a list revealing the top institutions for academic reputation and prestige.

Edinburgh listed among world’s best for reputation

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2025 has ranked the University of Edinburgh 30th out of 300 top institutions around the world.

Edinburgh scored an overall 67.3 in the rankings. Out of the academic institutions assessed, the University achieved first in Scotland and fifth in the UK.

The rankings are based on responses from more than 55,000 scholars globally, with respondents nominating institutions they see as being excellent in teaching and research.

Now in its 15th year, the approach for the rankings has been updated to increase the number of methods used to assess the reputation of academic institutions.

This year’s rankings invited voters to consider a wider range of institutions and also included a new voter diversity measure which rewards universities that receive votes from a broader range of countries and subject areas.

World-leading institution

The results illustrate the University’s strong reputational position as a world class teaching and research environment.

Consistently ranked one of the top 50 universities in the world, Edinburgh is ranked 27th in the QS World University Rankings.

Last year, the University was also named joint first in the world for industry, innovation and infrastructure in the Times Higher Impact Rankings.

This ranking is a testament to the dedication of everyone at the University of Edinburgh to deliver excellence across all that we do. We will keep on innovating and driving leadership in research and teaching so that Edinburgh can continue to be the remarkable University it is.
