Former Ursula Frayne Catholic College student Sean Vyner, who is studying a combined Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Philosophy, said he is thrilled to be heading to Nagoya University in Japan for a semester.

“As someone who is half Japanese, I plan to enhance my Japanese language skills, learn more about Japanese culture and values, and apply these insights to my future aspirations in Australia’s growing aerospace industry,” Sean said.

“Japan’s leadership in engineering and technological advancements align with my goal of contributing to innovative engineering solutions.”

Bachelor of Engineering Honours student Sarah Ann will spend a semester at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China where she is looking forward to taking computer science courses, engaging with student societies and connecting with the 180 Degrees Consulting branch in Beijing.

“I want to develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and business practices, so that I can contribute to stronger Australia-China business relationships,” said the Rossmoyne student, who’ll document her journey on social media to inspire others interested in international exchange opportunities.

Emily Xiao, who is pursuing a double degree in Civil Engineering and Statistics, will travel to Hong Kong where she plans to explore Hong Kong’s innovative approach to sustainable infrastructure and urban design.

“I’d like to connect with a diverse network of professionals and students to gain a fresh perspective on building sustainable cities, which I hope will contribute to my goal of creating more sustainable urban environments in Australia and globally,” Emily said.

Honours student Hannah Waldron, who is majoring in Economics, Politics and International Relations and minoring in Mandarin Chinese as part of her Bachelor of Philosophy, wants to explore the intersections between economics, policy, energy and technology at National Tsinghua University in Taiwan.

“With a fascination for the interconnected nature of history and language, I hope to develop insights into Taiwan’s cultural nuances and discover methods to build stronger economic and cultural relationships between Australia and Asia,” Hannah said.

“Taiwan’s unique culture, innovation in semiconductors, and leadership in technology align with the Taiwanese passion for energy and economics.”

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduates who are passionate about strengthening ties between Australia and Asia.

Recipients receive funding to study in either China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan for up to two semesters.

The funding supports travel, study and living expenses as scholars immerse themselves in the cultural, social and political experiences of the region.
