The University of Leicester has today (Wednesday) announced it is to join BID Leicester in support of the BID’s mission to continue to transform Leicester city centre for the benefit of all who live, work, study and visit.
The Leicester Business Improvement District (BID) is a business-led and business-funded not for profit organisation which provides a strong voice for more than 700 businesses in the city centre’s BID area, which includes the city’s Cultural Quarter, Old Town, and the historic New Walk at the edge of the University campus.
The BID aims to achieve this transformation through a commitment to making Leicester city-centre cleaner, safer and more attractive, raising the profile of the city through high-quality events, and providing a strong voice for businesses in the BID area.
Joining the BID as a voluntary member will provide additional services for staff and students, increase connectivity between the University and city centre businesses, and allow the University to continue its support for the business community of Leicester.
Students and staff will benefit from multiple projects and BID initiatives, including access to special offers, discounts and events through the LoyalFree app, Independent Leicester campaign, and the This Is Leicester interactive map.
Kerry Law, Chief Marketing & Engagement Officer at the University of Leicester, said: “We are delighted to formalise the University’s support for the business community of Leicester through joining the BID.
“Through our shared objectives of making Leicester a better place to live, work, visit, study and do business, we feel that working in partnership with the BID is a natural next step in our support for the city and wider region.
“To be able to announce this partnership in our Centenary year, as we mark the University’s origins as an institution for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, is especially poignant to us.”
Simon Jenner, BID Leicester Director, said: “The University of Leicester is an essential part of the vitality and success of the city, and we are delighted to be welcoming the organisation as part of the BID. Becoming a voluntary BID member will enhance partnership working between local businesses and the University, increasing connectivity within the city, creating a more vibrant student experience and supporting the local economy.”
The Leicester Business Improvement District was established after 85% of businesses voted ‘yes’ to the development of a BID in the city in a ballot in November 2017.
BID Leicester will operate for an initial 5-year term until January 2023, when a ballot of levy-paying businesses will take place to determine whether a further term is agreed.
