From 19 August 2022, University of Newcastle students will have access to a new space called ‘The House’, created in consultation with the University of Newcastle Students’ Association (UNSA) and our broad student community.
The House is part of the University’s commitment to an “Outstanding Student Experience” for all of our students.
The building at the Callaghan Campus will provide more space for students to spend time, study and work together and has been elegantly refurbished to maintain the stylish architectural features of the building.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky, AO said, “Studying at the university isn’t just about getting a degree, it’s also about the social connections and interactions. The House is a space where students, clubs and collectives can connect.
“The space has been designed to promote collaboration between students to improve their experience on campus. It includes study spaces and meeting rooms for students and areas where student clubs, societies and UNSA will be able to hold meetings, sessions, training, workshops and social activities.”
“The building has great history and has had different purposes throughout its life and that character has been maintained as it now takes on its new life as a place for students. I am proud to be able to offer this to students,” Professor Zelinsky said.
The House was originally constructed as a staff club and restaurant. Care was taken to preserve the heritage of the building. The architecture includes high raked ceilings, curved walls and original light fixtures all thoughtfully restored, to create a warm and inviting space for students.
UNSA’s president, Jessica Philbrook explained how the space would give students another place to study and an inviting place where they can spend time on campus.
“Based on student survey feedback, UNSA and the Student Spaces Working Group reviewed student spaces on campus and identified opportunities for us to provide more facilities and spaces for students at Callaghan campus.
“Safe and fit-for-purpose student spaces is something UNSA are deeply passionate about, and we are thrilled that the University is engaging with us to make it happen.
“The House will give students, not only another safe place to hang-out, but also a place for them to keep warm, connect and study.
“The House has comfortable seating, a kitchenette, accessible and inclusive facilities and Zoom-enabled bookable meeting room spaces for students to work. We feel it will be a really nice place for students to be.
“UNSA is also very supportive of the extended hours access, which means students can utilise the space from 6am to 1am.”
The House, designed by Ancher Mortlock Murray and Woolley, is located on the Callaghan Campus, next to the Shortland Building. It was officially opened on 22 August by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Alex Zelinsky.
